Society is living longer due to advances in medicine, we need to be able to prolong life in a healthier fashion to take the pressure of off our healthcare system.  To do this we must understand how we age at a cellular level and determine if age is really a 'thing'.  Do we grow unhealthy and then age or age and get unhealthy?  Tonight's talks will hopefully challenge your perception of what ageing really is.

An age-old question?

Why do we age, and how has science helped us understand that? In this talk, Dr. Craig Manning will explore some of the foundational ideas of ageing and how they are changing and challenge our perception of what 'ageing' is. He will also show how his research on automated nematode worm population monitoring could help us better understand how to age healthier.

Spitfires, sharks and Mars – how to bring them all into a single sentence using science

How old are the cells in our body and are their components the same age as the cell they occupy? Cells are continually replacing their damaged components, indeed in some tissues the cells themselves are designed to be disposable! Have you ever wondered why there is a never-ending supply of dust! At this point I could give you the sentence to link sharks, mars and spitfires, I can reassure you that it would not be "We are sending a shark to mars in a spitfire to save money and astronauts". You will still need to come and hear about the science that helps age cells to inform both medicine and
