Join us for the launch event of Pint of Science Southampton!
We will take you on a journey to a place where Art and Science collide - talks will cover topics of pain and trauma and how they can be expressed through painting and art. Is pain entirely subjective or can we find geometric relationships in these feelings?
Must we first understand pain before we can overcome it?
*Please note this event was previously advertised to be in NST City*

Paint Your Pain
Sarvenaz Sohrabi
(Researcher in Art and Health)
Painting has been shown to have a beneficial impact for people in representing their state of mind/body in a visual way, allowing them to produce an image that everybody can relate to. In the past, researchers collected various paintings from people dealing with chronic diseases.
I am interested in analysing meaningful artworks by detecting similarities and differences in the choice of shapes, colours, art mediums from brushes to markers, drawing sizes, and so on. This will allow us to communicate to the public how pain linked to illness affects everyday life.

The Science of Pain
Dr Cathy Price
(Consultant in Pain Medicine (Solent NHS Trust))
Pain is a complicated thing! While we all think pain is easy - “it just hurts“ - managing pain can turn out to be hard work. If we start to think about pain then we start to ask questions like: why does it hurt sometimes more than others? Why sometimes when it should hurt, does it in fact not hurt at all?
Understanding the answers to these questions can help us manage pain when it starts getting difficult. If we don’t understand pain fully, we can get management horribly wrong.
I will describe the science of pain - what we know, what we don’t know, what we should know.
