We'll look at neurological disease from the perspective of a Parkinson's disease patient (Tom) and a doctor (Liz), who will speak about Dementia. Both will give you an insight into their experience with these conditions and current research. You'll also have a chance to boost your brain's performance with Kanch. Please note that the event will be in the first floor function room. See you there!

A story about Tom

I intend to share my personal journey through from diagnosis in 2005 up to the present day. I will talk about my experience with work and issues of side effects as well as the symptoms of Parkinson's. I will discuss around the research trial I am part of and share my involvement with the charity in Bristol, including the self management course I facilitated. Some of my talk will dwell on the two long distance bike rides I got involved with. This is my personal account and in no way represents everyone's condition as each follows their own journey.

I can't Remember

We usually see the effects of dementia in elderly people, but changes in the brain start more than 15 years before diagnosis, often when people are still of working age. New medications and lifestyle changes might well slow the progression of dementia if given early enough. Using Magnetic Resonance brain scans, blood and psychology tests, our research asks how best to detect people destined to develop dementia even before they have symptoms. A bigger question is whether people of late working age would wish to know their risk of dementia, without guarantees that it can be cured.

Focused, faster, smarter: performance enhancing drugs for the brain

Performance enhancing drugs improving physical performance are well established but what about drugs or training methods of improving academic performance without actually studying? What if you could change you frazzled brain into a well oiled, focused machine capable of handling any task any type of homework. The chances are you already take something. From caffeine to meditation and everything in between, we will review what you can do to improve your performance in an exam or on a pub quiz.
