Take off with us on a journey from extrasolar planets in our neighbourhood to far away galaxies, without even leaving the pub! Build your own telescope and enjoy the music of the stars. This event is on the ground floor and so is accessible for those with impaired mobility. Pint of Science Edinburgh is supported by an Innovation Initiative Grant from the Edinburgh Fund at the University of Edinburgh.

Finding planets around other stars

It's been over 20 years since we discovered the first planet orbiting a star other than our Sun. Today, we know of more than 2,000 exoplanets, and we're still discovering more! We've found that exoplanets are incredibly diverse: from big gas giants orbiting very close to their parent stars to small rocky planets with orbits of only a few hours. Ken Rice will discuss how to detect planets around other stars, what we know about their characteristics, and whether or not we might expect to find a potentially habitable planet in the near future.

The life stories of galaxies

Galaxies come in all different sizes, shapes and colours. Some have large discs and beautiful spiral arms, like our own Milky Way. Others look more boring, like the large elliptical galaxies. But what causes this large variety in galaxies? How do galaxies change their appearances over time? These are the questions that we are going to address tonight. We will discuss how galaxies form and evolve, and talk about a new galaxy survey called MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory), which uses a small telescope in New Mexico to learn more about the life stories of galaxies.
