Prevention Based on Prediction: How to simulate ice sheets and coastal wave movement

The Magic Hat has a very shallow ramp entrance from street level. The space is designed for wheelchairs to move about in and has a fully accessible toilet.

Are you interested in modelling and simulations? Do you want to know how these tools help research to progress? Come along and join our speakers, Sammie and Jack, and learn how computational predictions of the polar regions reveal the future of our planet and how modelling possible coastal habitats can help to prevent Newcastle’s coast from heavy wave impact!

Fake it ‘til You Make It

Jack Duffy (PhD Student, Newcastle University)
If you want to restore a habitat, then you have to convince a lot of people that it’s worthwhile by using evidence, but how can you get that evidence without doing the restoration first? Join me as I explain how I’m building a fake forest, reef and meadow, to explore how these habitats can reduce wave impacts along our coast. I’ll be impacting these fake habitats with real waves in Newcastle University’s wave tank, and I’ll be bringing my own wave tank with me, so you too can have a go at protecting our coasts…

A Slippery Situation: Melting Ice in Antarctica and Greenland

Sammie Buzzard (Assistant Professor, Northumbria University)
What happens in the polar regions doesn't stay in the polar regions. Learn how we monitor them, predict how they will change in the future, and what that means for us. Find out what it's like to be a scientist working on the ice and what you can do to help protect some of our planet's most fragile places.
