Two fantastic talks from researchers in pioneering zoology and marine biology

What can animals teach us about love and sex?

We devote more or our cultural life to love, sex and romance than almost anything else. Why is it so entertaining and puzzling to think about, and so hard to get right? Why should it be so complex for us, but so simple for animals… or is it? In this presentation we will strap ourselves in and embark on a journey through the wilder “nether regions” of animal reproduction: fathers with placentas giving birth, booby-trapped vagina mazes, detachable penis missiles, kamikaze sperm, handcuff-shaped genitals, insects blackmailing each other into sex, and much more.

Coral spawning with petticoats and hurricanes

Off the back of our pioneering research trips to Guam, Curacao and Belize, see how The Deep is applying new research methods in our brand new coral facility right here in Hull. After the worst coral bleaching the world has seen, this presentation will show how the collecting techniques used to harvest coral larvae from mass spawning events can help reef restoration.
