Diet and cancer prevention
Dr Amanda Cross
(Senior Lecturer in Cancer Epidemiology at Imperial College London)
Why are there such differences globally in the number and types of cancers diagnosed? Cancers that affect the large intestine, as well as breast and lung cancer, are common in Westernised countries, while others, such as liver and stomach cancer, are more common in less developed countries. This may be related to differences in diet and lifestyle across the globe, with up to 70% of certain cancers potentially linked to this. Amanda will describe studies on diet and cancer prevention and what we should (and should not!) be eating to reduce our cancer risk.
Using the immune system to treat diseases
Anna Domogala
(PhD student at Anthony Nolan)
Dr Anushruti Sarvaria
(Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Anthony Nolan)
To protect us, the immune system attacks anything recognised as ‘foreign’, such as bacteria or viruses. Unfortunately, it is tougher to combat cancer cells, which can escape detection. Researchers are developing an approach which uses immune cells called Natural Killer Cells as well-trained snipers. Anna and Anushruti will tell us how advances in our understanding of these will help us exploit their activity and specifically target and destroy cancer cells.
