Is prescribing always safe? Exploring the appropriateness of medicines in older ICU patients.

ICU patients are among the most clinically vulnerable people in hospital. You’d expect the medicines they’re given to be the safest and most effective available. Unfortunately, that’s not always true.
Current research shows that some medications prescribed to these people can be ‘inappropriate’ and these decisions can directly result in poorer patient outcomes.
Join me as I share the work I’ve done so far to tackle this issue, and my frustrations as a pharmacist witnessing prescribing that causes avoidable patient harm. Because knowledge and awareness don’t just inform – they drive meaningful change!

New treatments for old disease; repurposing rheumatic drugs to treat interstitial lung disease

We have completed the first 30 months of our specialist clinic established to treat patients with interstitial lung disease and now present the results of our work on the outcomes of patients with a previously fatal condition. We have treated 130 patients with interstitial lung disease using drugs initially designed for rheumatic disorders. The effect on interstitial lung disease has been significant and is improving outcomes and prolonging life for patients whose only previous hope of survival was lung transplantation surgery.
