Join us at Leaf for an evening of fascinating science featuring four expert speakers who will share their cutting-edge research in liver regeneration, heart health, and immunology. You will get a glimpse into the future of liver transplant surgery, hear about the silent epidemic of irregular heartbeats and how it is being tackled, and will delve into the latest advances in immunology. We look forward to seeing you there!
How to Regenerate a Liver
Dr Robert Young
(Surgical Trainee and Clinical Research Fellow )
Unlike any other organ in the human body, the liver has a unique capacity to regenerate. It is possible to surgically remove up to 80% of the liver and within 6 weeks it will grow back to the normal size. This talk will shed light on how we are learning about how this amazing process works, and how our growing understanding of these processes is having an incredible impact on liver surgery and the prospects for “off the shelf” livers for people requiring transplants.
Getting to the Heart of Irregular Rhythms and Stroke
Professor Deidre Lane
(Reader in Cardiovascular Health)
Professor Gregory Lip
(Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine)
The most common heart rhythm disorder, known as atrial fibrillation, is a leading cause of stroke and heart failure, with a high risk of death and disability. The big problem is that atrial fibrillation is commonly silent. Sadly, this means it is often diagnosed only when it has already affected the patient in a devastating way, for example after a stroke. In this talk, Gregory & Deirdre will discuss work on increasing public awareness of the condition, improving detection and prevention, and when diagnosed, improving the ways the condition is managed.
Last Line of Defence: Fighting Infection when the Immune System Doesn't Work
Dr Anne-Grete Märtson
(Postdoctoral Research Associate Phramacology)
Infections can cause serious disease in patients whose immune systems aren't working properly (immunocompromised). These infections are a massive clinical problem both locally and globally, and treating them is a growing challenge as we constantly need to optimise therapies to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Anne-Grete will share how she is working on laboratory models to investigate the emergence of antibiotic resistance, and how this work will give new options to develop and accelerate drug development.
