Beauty for the beast: how beauty is reflected into animal minds
Dr Elisabetta Versace
(Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences)
We may change and refine our aesthetic preferences throughout life, but at the same time some aesthetic judgments seem to emerge spontaneously, without any training. Is this the same for other animals? Do they share our views on “beauty”? Is there any objective criterion on beauty that we can extract based on animals’ views? I will discuss what I have observed in animal research.
How good are you at detecting emotional expressions?
Prof Isabelle Mareschal
(Professor in Visual Cognition and Head of Psychology Department)
Most people might think that they are good at assessing other people’s mood or emotions from their facial expressions, and being poor at identifying someone’s emotional state from their facial expressions can be associated with disease. However this idea assumes that all ‘healthy’ people identify emotions in the same way, but there is increasing evidence to suggest that isn’t the case. In this presentation, I will discuss current challenges with judging people’s emotions from their expressions, and will present new methods to move forward.
