Unlock the secrets below the skin with these three exciting talks, taking us through the fascinating science of our bodies. Straight from the University of Dundee & Ninewells Hospital, our fantastic speakers will chat everything from glucose monitoring and heart attacks, to how you yourself could get involved with clinical trials.

The highs and lows of diabetes

Dr Alison McNeilly (Principal Investigator, Systems Medicine, University of Dundee Medical School, Ninewells Hospital,)
4.3 million people in the UK live with diabetes - and there are about another million undiagnosed! Every week, there are 200 amputations, 800 strokes and heart attacks and 2,300 cases of heart failure caused by diabetes. It's a disease which affects every organ in the body and is becoming ever more common. However, treatment of diabetes has been revolutionised before - what was once a death sentence, now can be managed. How can we build on our past success in helping patients? I will discuss how changes in sugar levels can affect the brain and other organs and how we are trying to tackle this in the lab. We will look at the latest blood glucose monitoring technology, and how it can help to help patients manage their diabetes better to live longer, healthier lives.

But what if you could skip the hassle entirely? What if you could still take part in clinical research without ever having to leave the comfort of your home? Could you really tell the study team that the new pill you’ve been given got rid of your persistent headache while you’re standing in line at Clark’s for a 5am sausage roll? It may sound like a pipedream, but research is increasingly shifting towards putting our study participants first, so all that is left for you to decide is where in the world you’re going to join our research from…
