PC-ravaged clowns or plant powered pioneers?

Following on from a less well-publicised vote at the University of Stirling, students at the University of Cambridge voted to support a transition to a solely vegan menu across it's catering services. Such actions, along with an over 1000% rise in those identifying as vegan since 2011, point to veganism becoming mainstream. However, UK newspaper portrayals suggest that despite their growing numbers, vegans are still oddities who, rather than being harmless tree-huggers and animal lovers, might actually be a threat to 'British Culture'. Oh, and the animals remain absent from the conversation...
