When the weather turns wild, what happens to the things we grow? From the secret lives of leafy greens under attack to the increasingly dramatic moods of West Midlands skies, this night explores how our changing planet is reshaping both field and forecast. Whether you’re tending a garden or just braving the rain to the pub, come discover how science is helping us grow, prepare and thrive in a wilder world.

Happier Vegetables: Saving Leafy Greens from Disease

Mikali Bayrak (PhD Student, University of Warwick)
Leafy greens like cabbage, rocket, and radish are enjoyed worldwide for their fresh flavour and health benefits. But these everyday crops face a hidden threat in the soil: Fusarium oxysporum, a fungus that causes plants to wilt and die. Most Fusarium oxysporum strains target specific crops, yet some can cross between closely related vegetables, spreading disease more widely. By uncovering what these strains have in common—and what sets them apart—we can help develop stronger, disease-resistant crops and move towards more sustainable farming.

Wild Weather in the West Midlands: What Can We Do to Prepare?

Dr Hali Healy (Research Fellow)
Have you been affected by floods, extreme heat/cold or strong winds? We in WM Adapt  know UK cities aren’t ready for weather extremes, but we also know it’s possible to become ready in ways that meet residents’ needs. Part of the problem though is knowing what those needs are, and how to meet them, and WM Adapt is trying to solve this problem. Please join Hali Healy of UoB who will share answers we’ve found so far. We’ll do a fun pub quiz,  share experiences, beer and banter,  and talk about challenges and possible solutions for the West Midlands,  based on views of residents like yourselves.
