It is taught to us throughout school, can influence large-scale changes and continues to explore and discover new advancements. But how has Science effected our society, culture and everyday lives? Tonight we talk about Science in our society.

The Robots to be most afraid of!

Rob Miles (Science Communicator )
The word “Robot” was first used in a Sci-Fi play about mass produced workers who staged a rebellion resulting in the extinction of the human race. Ever-since, depictions of a robo-apocalypse have been portrayed countless times in pop-culture, from the West-End shows to big screen blockbusters. But, should we fear robotic creations?

Join Computer Scientist Rob Miles as he explains how robots are affecting our lives, looks into the more insidious technological advancements of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and attempts to work out which robots we should be the most afraid of.

Science and Human Nature

Dr Stephen Burwood (Lecturer in Philosophy )
To be modern is to live in an aporia: an impasse in reasoning and its consequent philosophical puzzlement. Central to modern thought, not least our modern scientific worldview and its descriptions, is the death of human exceptionalism. The problem is that we do not always recognise ourselves in these descriptions and find them hard to reconcile with our everyday views of ourselves. It is not enough to just abandon scientific descriptions; but nor is it enough to claim that our everyday views are simply an illusion. Thinking through this aporia is a defining characteristic of our age
