Climate change is not only challenging life in our oceans but has a knock on effect to humans too! Tonight we will delve into the deep and learn how environmental change is altering biodiversity in our oceans and how fisheries science may hold the key to climate solutions. We will hear from Marine Ecologist Dr Jasmin Godbold and Fisheries Scientist Dr Martina Stiasny, with a special appearance from comedian Charlie Vero-Martin as her beloved character Professor Marina Von Flip Flop to end the night.
Bioturbation: why do we need animals that live in marine sediments?
Dr Jasmin Godbold
(Professor in Marine Ecology)
No area of coastal or shelf sea environment is unaffected by human influence and it has been estimated that nearly 98% of ocean systems are affected. My research focuses on the effect that environmental change and human activities have on the diversity and behaviour of animals that live in marine sediments. In this talk we will be exploring what these animals do, why they are important for the wider marine ecosystem, and how changes in their diversity and behaviour in response to environmental change or human activities not only affects the marine ecosystem, but also human well-being.
A very important keynote speech from Professor Marina Von Flip Flop
Charlie Vero-Martin
(Comedian)
Charlie Vero-Martin is a Scottish comedian appearing tonight as her beloved character Professor Marina Von Flip Flop. This exuberant marine biologist is one of many characters from her new one-woman sketch show Picnic that will be at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Charlie is a recent finalist of the UK's Sketch Off and has written for BBC Radio 4, BBC Scotland, Griff Rhys Jones and Hat Trick Productions. She is in no way a professional marine biologist but is very funny at pretending to be. Jam-packed full of laughter - EdFest Magazine ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Why fish(eries scientists) will save the world!
Martina Stiasny
(Lecturer in Marine Biology, SOES)
Do you ever think about fish beyond your fish and chips? But maybe you worry about the future in light of global change? Let me tell you how the two are related, and why fisheries science has all the answers!!!
