From individual proteins and complexes to cells and organs, science relies on us being able to visualise what can't be seen with the naked eye. Find out how this is done at radically different scales from proteins to bacteria to the entire heart. There might even be some musical scales.
Science, Antimicrobial drugs, and rock’n’roll
Dr Julien Bergeron
(Senior Lecturer in the Randall Centre for Cell & Molecular Biophysics)
Julien Bergeron is a Senior Lecturer in Electron Microscopy at King’s College London by day, and his lab uses advanced Electron microscopes to study how bacteria cause infections and become resistant to antibiotics. By night, he is a singer/guitarist, playing a blend of indie rock and folk, heavily inspired by his academic research (and with a tongue firmly in cheek). For Pint of Science, he will be talking about his research, and the joys and pains of scientific research, punctuated by songs from his former band Structure2function.
Matters of the Heart: Imaging Disease Before It Strikes
Dr Alkystis Phinikaridou
(Associate Professor in Imaging Biology, King’s College London)
Our hearts are at the centre of everything we do—the core of our existence and, as some say, our feelings—so keeping them safe matters to us all. Yet, heart and blood vessel diseases are one of the biggest health risks we face, often developing quietly without any warning signs. Curious how doctors can see inside your heart without ever picking up a scalpel? In this talk, we’ll explore how cutting-edge MRI technology lets us peek inside the heart like never before and how it transforms the way we detect and understand heart diseases, and how it could help save lives—maybe even yours. Grab a drink, bring your questions, and join us for a fascinating journey into the future of medical imaging!
