We may not see flying cars above Oxford Road by 2030, but our cities are changing...they're getting smarter. Does that mean that humans are getting dumber??

Join us in an interactive evening where we will explore how cities can be made into 'future-proof', ‘smart-wise’ liveable communities.

From smarter cities to wiser humans – (at least a little)

Joe Ravetz & Dr Nuno Pinto (Joe is Future Cities Lead at The University of Manchester & Dr Pinto Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and Urban Design, The University of Manchester)
Reasons to be afraid….as you go around the city your personal data is harvested & sold on, social media is a battlefield where trolls win by outrage and intolerance, and too many are still homeless, deprived or excluded.

Reasons to be cheerful...half the world’s population is connected by social media, some cities are beginning to use this to grow their ‘collective local intelligence’.

This session starts with Joe’s cartoon guide to the digital perils & opportunities, algorithms & transformations, Nuno follows with the science of how to bring public services into the digital century.
