What if the future of medicine isn’t louder or more dramatic—but smarter? From invisible changes that control our genes, to intelligent tools that can read our blood, to harnessing radiation in surprising new ways, a quiet revolution is underway in how we understand and treat disease. Explore the ideas transforming healthcare from within—where biology, technology, and innovation come together in unexpected ways.
Join three speakers exploring AI-powered blood diagnostics (BloodCounts!), epigenetic changes in cardiac disease, and targeted radioactive drugs for cancer detection and treatment.

Doctoring with Big Data

Dr. Suthesh Sivapalaratnam (Consultant in Haemostasis and Thrombosis (St. Bartholomew’s Hospital), Honorary Senior Lecturer (Queen Mary University of London))
We talk a lot about AI making everything better. What evidence do we have that it works in Medicine? I will explain where I see it's role, as the dishwasher. I will talk you through our exciting project, BloodCounts!, where we aim to make the ChatGPT of blood.

Exploring beyond your genes: how epigenetics shapes your heart

Dr. Adrian Rodriguez (Postdoctoral Researcher (Queen Mary University of London))
Our DNA contains genes that carry the basic instructions of how our body works, but genes themselves are not the whole story. Changes on top of these can determine which genes are turned on or off, shaping how the cells function across different organs, such as the heart. In this talk, we will explore how epigenetics plays a key role in cardiac disease. Using either samples directly obtained from human hearts or lab-grown heart cells that let us examine the effects of turning specific genes on or off, we can better understand these epigenetic changes occurring in common cardiac conditions.

Can Radioactive Drugs Assist our Bodies in Fighting Cancers?

Callum Emin (CRUK RadNet PhD Student (Queen Mary University of London))
Radiation has received a bad reputation over the years, however correctly harnessing it is crucial in our war on cancer. Unlike externally administered radiation, injectable radioactive drugs treat and diagnose previously undetectable cancers across the body. Radioactive damage can be used to directly kill cancer cells, however in low doses these drugs have the potential to label cancer cells for killing by our immune systems. By combining the specificity of these drugs to cancer with lower doses of radiation we can design safer more effective treatments.
