Life imitates art, and art is moulded by life. Creative Reactions explores the meeting grounds of science and art, where artists influenced by current research will speak about the work they do. On the night we shall explore both sound (with James Cave) and vision (with Alun Kirby).

Photographic memory

Alun Kirby (University of York)
Science is getting closer to understanding how memory works, but what IS memory? Despite the efforts of psychologists and philosophers, we still can't really say. Working from historical and current neuro-philosophical theories, Alun Kirby uses cameraless photography to make us think about memory. His works examine the hypothesis that 'We Are Our Memories'.

Eonsounds: Music From Mountains'

James Cave (Department of Music, University of York)
What would it be like to listen to a mountain? Or hear rock formations as they grow? Composer James Cave has been working with electronic musician Ben Eyes (aka Quip), to explore more than a billion years of the earth’s history through sound and music. Spurred by his personal experience of the 2016 Italian earthquake, James and Quip have created a new composition exploring the geology of the Apennines.
