Hide inside the bushes and watch carefully as we explore the hidden world of the animal kingdom. First, Dr Laszlo Talas will reveal how animals stay hidden in a world full of teeth and claws! Next, Oliver Beasley of Bristol Zoological Society will uncover how these incredible animals are protected through conservation programmes in an increasingly dangerous world.

Why aren’t tigers green?

Dr Laszlo Talas (Lecturer in Animal Sensing and Biometrics, University of Bristol)
Nature is colourful. Colours can help to hide from predators, draw the attention of mates, or warn enemies of poisonous defence. However, not all colours make obvious sense to us. Why is the tiger hiding in green grass not green? Why are zebras black and white? These questions lead us to delve into the intricate world of animal coloration. Understanding the evolution and purpose of these hues requires interdisciplinary research spanning biology, ecology, and genetics. I will discuss how the combination of these disciplines can unravel the mysteries of animal colours.

A journey through in-field conservation with Bristol Zoological Society.

Oliver Beasley (Lecturer in Conservation Science & Tanzania Project Manager, Bristol Zoological Society)
Bristol Zoological Society is a conservation charity with a mission “to save wildlife through conservation action and engage people with the natural world”. As part of this mission, we lead ten conservation programmes focused across eight countries. This work is reflected in the collection we keep at Bristol Zoo Project, from blue-eyed black lemurs to turquoise dwarf geckos. My talk will introduce you to some of these species, explore the threats facing them in their natural habitat, and give you an insight into the work we are doing to help protect wildlife.
