Join us for the number one Liverpool Pint of Science night as we consider the implications of literally and metaphorically spending a penny!  Our two main speakers will guide you through the conundrums of how NHS funding is splashed or slashed, and how to best team up with AI.  Also not to be missed, our daring Shots of Science speakers will compete in a series of rapid-fire talks with the winner voted for by you!

How Much is Your Life Worth to NHS England?

Rebecca Bresnahan (Research Associate, Liverpool Reviews and Implementation Group (LRiG))
In 2021-22, NHS England spent £17.7 billion on medicines. Government budgets are tighter than ever, so who decides which medicines we should splash the cash on? Do you know how much your life is worth to NHS England? Rebecca from Liverpool Reviews and Implementation Group (LRiG) is here to spill the tea! Rebecca’s talk will guide you through the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) technology appraisal process and explain how LRiG assesses whether the pharmaceutical companies’ medicines are life-changing or life-extending enough to warrant the cash.

Tiny Wee Robots: Artificial Intelligence and Urine Infections

Alex Howard (Consultant Medical Microbiologist and PhD student)
Doctors are good at looking after people. They’re also good at prescribing antibiotics. They’re less good at figuring out how likely an antibiotic is to work. Computers are the opposite: good at working out how likely something is to happen, but don’t get the human bit. So how can we work together? Can a computer make a doctor’s life easier by telling them how likely an antibiotic is to work? Can this cure the patient quicker AND be cost-effective? Alex’s project aims to answer those questions.
