Stem Cells. They're increasingly hailed as the miracle cure for a host of conditions that severely affect our perception of the world, but is this a reality or simply hype? Tonight we hear how neural stem cells have the potential to treat the damaged or diseased brain, and how a novel embryonic stem cell-derived product is currently being trialled in patients to treat a common form of blindness. During the event there will be games and special Pint of Science goodies to be won! This event will be held on the first floor.

A rush of blood to the head: Rebuilding the brain

Mathew Tata (PhD Student)
As global life expectancy increases, problems with the ageing brain are becoming bigger burdens on healthcare services and society in general. How can we stop or even reverse degeneration of the nervous system? Recent research suggests ‘neural stem cells’ could be used to re-grow parts of the diseased or damaged cerebrum. PhD student Mathew will discuss his research into how signals from different origins, like blood vessels, can be exploited to ensure neural stem cells become the smartest option for saving our ailing brains.

Curing blindness: Seeing is believing

Professor Pete Coffey (Professor of Visual Psychophysics)
Every single one of us, by the age of 80, will experience vision loss from eye disease. By far the most dramatic and blinding disorder is age-related macular degeneration, which affects a quarter of those aged over 65. I will discuss a new innovative approach to not only treating this disease, but curing it, thus stopping the onset of blindness.
