From the way we move to the way we learn, technology is transforming our daily lives in ways we're only beginning to understand. Our talks tonight highlight the promises, challenges, and ethical questions of a world where AI is increasingly embedded in our bodies, minds, and daily routines.
Move Smart: Monitoring How Everyday Activities Influence Health with Wearable Technology and Edge AI
Parvin Ghaffarzadeh
(PhD Student @ University of Hull)
Ground reaction forces (GRFs) reveal the “hidden forces” in walking, running, and impacts. Force plates measure GRFs accurately but are expensive and limited to labs. MoveSmart explores whether Apple Watch motion sensors, aligned with force-plate data, can estimate GRFs in real time—supporting future research in gait monitoring and activity-loading assessment outside the lab.
AI at University: Are We Optimising Ourselves Away?
Dr. Neil Gordon
(Professor in Computer Science @ University of Hull)
Generative AI is transforming universities faster than many of us realise. From designing courses and creating lecture notes to marking essays and giving feedback, AI systems can now automate almost every step of the academic pipeline. But what happens when efficiency comes at the cost of human connection? In this talk, we’ll explore the promise and pitfalls of the “AI‑enhanced university”— where ensembles of digital agents could, in theory, run entire courses without teachers or even students! Together, we’ll ask: what should remain uniquely human in education, and how do we stop optimising ourselves out of the picture? We'll consider some of the history of this, current examples, and the future, and how this is relevant to other industries too!
