Ice Ice baby! There are three indisputable facts in the climate change debate; our world is warming, the polar caps are melting and sea levels are rising. Tonight, three scientists transport you from the freezing poles to the balmy tropics to provide insights on the environmental challenges we face. Climate change is something we all need to sit up and pay attention to — it’s snow joke.

Ice, Climate, and Sea Levels – Cold Facts vs. Hot Air

The future security and prosperity of the world’s coastal cities and survival of many unique coastal habitats is threatened by future sea-level rise. Most of the contributions to sea-level rise can now be predicted with some confidence – the greatest remaining uncertainty lies in the contribution ice-loss from the polar ice sheets resting on Antarctica and Greenland. I will describe the inherent vulnerabilities that could lead to ice-loss in the future, and its contribution to irreversible ice-sheet collapse.

Climate Change: Is the Future Here?

The beginning of 2016 was greeted with record-breaking warm temperatures, record-low levels of Arctic Sea Ice, extreme coral bleaching, and disastrous droughts in Africa and South-East Asia. The list begs the question, 'Are we seeing our climate future now? "Is 'dangerous' climate change already here?

Quito: A City's Resilience to Climate Change

In 2010, Quito’s municipal authorities identified the need to investigate the vulnerability of five strategic sectors to climate change: water, biodiversity, risks, agriculture and health. The expectation being, first collect cutting-edge evidence, then develop climate-compatible policies and finally implement a solid adaptation plan to increase Quito’s resilience to a changing environment. Sound straightforward right? Well… let’s discuss policy implementation over a pint!
