Viruses want to copy themselves. Pain wants your attention. Scientists? We study both using clever drugs and some surprisingly weird experiments. Join us as we explore how antivirals sabotage viruses, why getting medicines to behave in the body is harder than it sounds, and how chillies, ice baths, and even electric shocks help us understand pain (don’t worry, it’s all ethical!)

Modern Day Torture Devices (For the Greater Good)

Arnas Tamasauskas (PhD Student, University of Liverpool)
Pain is a universal human experience, but when it becomes chronic, it transforms from a helpful warning signal into a debilitating disorder. So, how do we study something so invisible and subjective? We create it. In this talk we will discuss how chillis, ice buckets, and electric needles can be ethically used help us understand chronic pain. Learn how these “torture devices” help us predict pain development and create treatment options for patients.

From Pill to Protection: The Science Behind Antivirals

Liz Challenger ( Research Assistant, Centre for Experimental Therapeutics)
How does a simple pill become a life-saving antiviral medicine? In this talk, we explore why getting enough medicine to the right place at the right time is one of the biggest challenges in antiviral development. We’ll unpack why medicines don’t always work the same way for everyone and why these variations can make or break the success of a promising antiviral. From population differences to dosing dilemmas, come discover the hidden science that transforms a molecule into medicine.

To Copy or Not to Copy: The War on Viral Replication

Ed Emmott (Reader in Virology & Proteomics)
A virus has one job: to make more virus. Our job is to learn how to stop them. From treatments like Paxlovid to Remdesivir, come find out how understanding viruses like coronavirus lets us develop drugs that throw a spanner in the virus’s machinery - tricking viruses into breaking themselves before they can spread.
