Despite the advances in the cognitive and neurosciences, there is still so much about the brain we do not know. From erasing unwanted memories to understanding how to treat pain in the brain. If you want to dive a little deeper into the fantastically complex organ that is the brain come down to the Bell Inn to enjoy some interesting talks whilst sipping your way through the delectable variety of drinks on offer. While we cannot promise to answer all there is to know, we can certainly promise a fascinating and fun evening!
Erasing Unwanted Memories
Dr Chris Bailey
(Senior Lecturer)
It's a disturbing prospect invoked by scenes from films like
'Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind', where people pay to have
heart-breaking memories erased from their minds. In reality, our
understanding of memory formation and storage suggests that erasing
'unwanted' memories could really help to treat disorders such as
post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.

Redefining bodily limits: the brain, the body and the world
Dr Abby Tabor
(Lecturer (Assistant Professor))
Persistent pain affects 25% of the population. As clinicians and as researchers we have a burgeoning knowledge of pain, despite this, our ability to effectively treat pain that persists is somewhat limited. I will discuss how exploring the very nature of experience, inseparable from brain, body and world is helping us approach pain in a different way. Drawing on recent work in prosthetics and augmented reality, I will suggest ways in which we can continually redefine the limits of our bodies.
