The impacts of trauma can be devastating and this evening we hear about fascinating research into the biological mechanisms that underpin this and what we can do about it. We shall also hear about the continued underrepresentation of women in science and whether things are improving as much as we might hope.
Underrepresentation of women in science
Dr. Manuela Marescotti
(Scientific Journal Editor and Postdoc)
The persistent underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) points to the need to continue promoting the awareness and understanding of this phenomenon.
Academic publications give us an opportunity to understand the underrepresentation of women in science. Here, I discuss the gender distribution of author submissions from 2019-2021 to the journal Brain Communications to shed light on this issue & its potential causes.

Trauma and adversity
Janet Poplawski
(PhD Student)
Stressors ranging from racial discrimination to war can have long-lasting effects on our health – both within our lifetimes and even across generations. Here, I explore this area of research: from the biological mechanisms underlying these processes to what we can do about it.
