Plastic overuse? Too much screen time? Are these really problems? Could the same materials in your rubber duck be used to solve issues in healthcare? Come along to hear how scientists from different disciplines are teaming up to  rehabilitate the materials used in these ‘bad’ technologies, for new uses in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

Pretty Poly...mers: Modern Uses of an Old Favourite

Dr Paul Thornton (Lecturer in Polymer Chemistry at University of Leeds)
Many, including popular beat combo The Buggles, state that we are living in the plastic age. Such materials contribute seamlessly to our everyday lives to the point that they may be deemed irreplaceable. However, plastics have received much criticism for both their inadequacy as drinking vessels for beer consumption, and more importantly the environmental issues that they can cause. Key contemporary uses of plastics will be detailed, in an attempt to make all enthusiastic for plastic, once more.

Liquid Crystals... Where’s the Sense in that?

Daniel Paterson (Research Fellow at the University of Leeds)
Jonathan Sandoe (Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds)
Stephen Evans (Professor in Molecular and Nanoscale Physics at the University of Leeds )
They say in Hospitals it’s infection that is the biggest killer. In the third world it is poor access to healthcare that continues to be one of the most pressing societal issues. Here, we will discuss why the frontiers of Chemistry, Medicine and Physics are coming together to help revolutionise the detection of pathogenic bacteria that cause infectious diseases. Our research aims to utilise Liquid Crystals to develop a new generation of low-cost, easy-to-use, point-of-care diagnostics to help tackle these increasingly pressing issues.
