Understanding epilepsy: do fruit flies hold the answer?

What are neurons and how do they communicate? What causes seizure? Carlo Giachello is an associate researcher at the University of Manchester investigating seizure generation using fruit flies as an experimental model. This talk will examine the basic mechanisms behind seizure and will reveal recent discoveries regarding new possible therapeutic approaches.

Treating epilepsy: from ancient times to modern day

For millennia, epilepsy was attributed to supernatural phenomena such as demonic possession. Early treatments included exorcism, bloodletting and trephining. Through the course of the 20th century better understanding of the biological basis of epilepsy has led to the development of a number of medications for epilepsy. The majority of people with epilepsy can now expect to achieve complete control of seizures but the treatments are not effective in all cases. What other treatment options are available for people with epilepsy? What does the future hold for the treatment of epilepsy?
