The Eye’s Mind: extremes of visual imagery in human consciousness
Adam Zeman
(Professor of Cognitive and Behavioural Neurology, University of Exeter)
Imagination is arguably the key to human intellect, and the ability to visualise is an important element of imagination. This talk will explore variations in the vividness of visual imagery, discuss their neural basis and describe recent work in Exeter on people - with ‘aphantasia’ and ‘hyperphantasia’ - whose experience lies at the extremes of the vividness spectrum.
Addiction – A role for imagination?
Dr Crawford Winlove
(Lecturer in Neuroscience, University of Exeter)
This talk will describe some of the neuroscientific theories and data that have shaped our understanding of addiction. It will also suggest that understanding the role of cognitive processes – in particular, those of imagination – could explain important aspects of normal human behaviour and how patterns of behaviour change in addiction.
