Although treatment of HIV has improved drastically in the last 20 years, early diagnosis is pivotal for medication to be most effective. HIV is prevalent in Bristol, but Common Ambition Bristol (CAB) are utilising innovative methods to improve HIV diagnosis, treatment and understanding. Whilst CAB lead the fight against HIV throughout Bristol, the innate immune system works within our bodies to protect each one of us from infection. From the large to the small scale, join us to find out more about the fight against HIV!
HIV in Bristol: Talk. Test. Protect.
Aisha Namurach
(Common Ambition Bristol Project Co-ordinator)
Dr Fiona Fox
(Senior Research Associate at Bristol Medical School)
HIV is no longer a terminal virus but a manageable condition if diagnosed early. Bristol is a high HIV prevalence city and more people from African and Caribbean heritage communities (ACHC) have undiagnosed HIV or a late diagnosis. Common Ambition Bristol (CAB) is a community powered project working to reduce HIV stigma and increase testing in ACHC. Community members are working with sexual health staff on outreach initiatives and testing clinics for ACHC. Find out about the innovative ways co-production is creating more equitable and accessible sexual health services.
Training the immune system to fight viruses without a vaccine
Dr Trevor Whittall
(Senior Lecturer (immunology) University of the West of England)
Failure to develop a vaccine for HIV should not mean we abandon the goal of limiting spread of this virus through enhancing immune responses. Exploring the mechanisms of innate resistance to viruses including HIV can teach us more about how the immune system manages day to day combat with a range of challenges, and new virus pandemics can also provide clues to tackling more intransigent problems.
