What's on your walls? How science helps us understand and conserve historic wallpapers
Dr Lynda Skipper
(Senior Lecturer, Lincoln School of Humanities and Heritage)
This talk explores how science contributes to the understanding and conservation of historic interiors, using examples from Lynda's work on a range of different historic wallpaper projects. From toxic wallpaper pigments to the dating of paper, we'll look at the many ways that science and conservation combine to help us understand more about the past, and preserve historic interiors for the future.
It's not just dirt: Why care about soils?
Professor Matthew Goddard
(Professor, Department of Life Sciences)
Soils grow 97% of the world’s food calories, support almost all terrestrial ecosystems, and contain twice the amount of carbon than in the atmosphere and all living things combined. Past dismissal of soils as just dirt, and disinterest in their science is now being radically turned around due to their key roles in growing food, supporting ecosystems and their ability to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This talk will explore some of the latest science and ideas in this area, and what it means for food security and reaching NetZero by 2050.
