Prospecting asteroids for clues to the origins of the Solar System

Dr Neil Bowles (University Lecturer)
In this talk I’ll describe NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission that launches this year. Most of our knowledge about conditions in the early Solar System 4.6 billion years ago comes from bits of asteroids that are left of over from this time and have fallen to Earth as meteorites but often these are badly contaminated by being rained on, covered in camel dung etc. Going to an asteroid and returning a sample allows us to get a pristine sample and help us look back to the formation of the Solar System.
