Recent years have seen numerous examples of extreme weather close to home, leading to damage and destruction of properties and infrastructure. Chris and Bogdan will talk about their recent research regarding the meteorology responsible for producing extreme weather in the UK and continental Europe. The talks will conclude with a summary of the outstanding challenges in weather forecasting concerning extreme events. Please note that this event takes place on the ground floor and is accessible for those with impaired mobility.

Riders On The Storm: Aircraft measurements within Atlantic Cyclones

Dr. Chris Dearden (Research Fellow School of Earth and Environmental Sciences)
Chris will talk about the latest research on extratropical cyclones, also known as low pressure systems or depressions. These large Atlantic storms are associated with heavy rain and damaging winds. Chris will discuss the relationship between cyclones and the jet stream, and show how recent measurements within the heart of these storms are being used to help improve weather forecasts for the UK.

What do we know about tornadoes in Europe?

Dr. Bogdan Antonescu (Research Associate School of Earth and Environmental Sciences)
Despite what is often assumed by the general public and even by meteorologists and researchers, tornadoes do occur in Europe and they are associated with injuries, fatalities and damages. Currently, the threat of tornadoes to Europe is underestimated. Bogdan will talk about how tornadoes form and what we currently know about tornadoes in Europe based on a synthesis of tornado reports since 1800.
