Join us for an evening of discovery as we explore the extraordinary workings of the human brain, across the shifting landscapes of mood and memory. University of Edinburgh researchers will share new findings on bipolar disorder, highlighting how body clock disruptions, light sensitivity, retinal changes, and glucose metabolism may drive mood episodes. We'll also explore how aging affects cognition, but may enhance creativity thanks to the brain's adaptability. Drawing on the latest neuroscience, the talk offers practical strategies to support cognitive resilience and lifelong curiosity.
Bipolar disorder - the undiscovered
Dr Nicole Needham
(Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh)
Bipolar disorder can be a devastating condition for people who experience it, yet little is understood about what causes it and how it could be prevented. Researchers at Edinburgh University are pursuing evidence that underlying disruptions to the body clock and metabolism are key drivers of mood episodes in bipolar disorder. Evidence suggests that people with bipolar disorder have increased sensitivity to light and differences in the structure of their retina, as well as altered glucose metabolism and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Exploring these processes further will help us understand the underlying causes and tailor new treatments in the future.

Still Got It: Creativity and the Aging Brain
Dr Tanvi Patel
(Postdoc researcher)
What happens to our brains as we age? How does this effect our ability to generate new ideas? And how can we keep our minds flexible, curious, and engaged as we grow older? In this talk, we will examine what cognitive neuroscience reveals about the aging brain – and how changes in memory, executive function, and brain structure can influence creative thinking—sometimes in surprising and positive ways. Contrary to the view of aging as a time of cognitive decline, I’ll present research that highlights how the brain’s remarkable adaptability can open new creative possibilities in later life.
Drawing on current evidence, I’ll share practical strategies to enhance creative thinking, support cognitive resilience, and promote well-being. Together, we’ll challenge outdated narratives and reframe aging as a time of innovation and continued growth.
