Women only make up 17% of scientists in academia. This event celebrates those women with talks from Kathryn Else on ways that parasites promote healing and Rachel Freemen presenting ideas from the field of system science.

Systems Science and Sustainability

Dr. Rachel Freeman (Research Associate in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering)
Sustainability is by nature a “systemic” issue. The issues involved in achieving sustainability cross many boundaries – in time (past, future, intergenerational), in space (global and local, geographical), in who’s involved (nations, households, ecosystems, other species), and in thought (capitalism, environmentalism, etc.). This talk will present some of the foundational ideas and methods from the field of systems science and discuss how they are contributing to the field of sustainability.

How parasites promote healing

Professor Kathryn Else ( Professor of Immunology)
Parasites are fascinating! Their interactions are complex and there is much we don’t understand. One thing is clear – parasites are great at modifying their hosts’ immune responses for their own survival. Expect to see real parasites up close; to imagine you’re a parasite trying to survive inside your host; to understand how parasites can alter an immune cell away from a form that can damage to one that heals and to learn how we might harness this remarkable ability of parasites for our benefit.
