Explore the science of emotions—from how they develop to why they matter—then zoom into the microscopic world where cells communicate, adapt, and even “eat” each other. Discover how advanced imaging helps us understand disease and treatments. Two talks linking our inner lives to the hidden lives of cells.

What Are Emotions?
Dr Jennifer Murphy
(Senior Lecturer in Psychology)
We all feel emotions every day, but have you ever stopped to wonder what they actually are? In this talk, we’ll delve into the fascinating science behind our feelings, from the biology that sparks them to the cognitive processes that shape how we experience them. We’ll explore whether emotions are universal, how our understanding of them grows from infancy into adulthood, and why some feelings seem so hard to decode. Most importantly, we’ll look at why recognising our own and others’ emotions matters for our wellbeing, relationships, and social lives. Come discover the hidden mechanics of what it means to feel.
Seeing is Believing: Cell Dynamics Under the Microscope
Liam Colley
(Postdoctoral Researcher School of Biosciences )
Ever wondered what a cell is really up to? With modern microscopy, we can now watch living cells send distress signals, team up, clash, and even “eat” each other. When these powerful images are combined with high‑throughput analysis, they reveal hidden patterns in how cells behave, communicate, and respond to their surroundings. In this talk, we’ll take a journey into this microscopic world to see how tumour cells, immune cells, and many others react to treatments and environmental changes. From tiny molecular events to large-scale biological insights, discover why every single cell has a story to tell.
