Is Merseyside the dog bite capital of the UK? Should people who commit a crime whilst under the influence of alcohol receive a similar, greater or lesser punishment? And how multilingual is Liverpool?

Join us to explore these questions and more, as we look at all different aspects of human behaviour, and try to understand more about why we act the way we do!

Dogs of the North: Does Liverpool have a Dog Bite Problem?

Dr John Tulloch (Tenure Track Fellow)
Recently dog bites and attacks have made national headlines, sadly due to an apparent rise in fatalities. Often at the centre of these stories is Merseyside, as it is reportedly the number one place for dog bites in the country. In this talk John will unpick whether this is true, and discuss what we do and do not know about dog bites in the UK and Merseyside. He'll explore what we can do to prevent them and what further research is needed to tackle this issue.

Alcohol Crime and Justice: A Complex Cocktail

Dr Carly Lightowlers (Senior Lecturer - Criminology and Research Fellow ADR UK (Administrative Data Research UK))
Should those who offend whilst under the influence of alcohol receive the same, more or less punishment? Join us to explore this question, and how the courts deal with the many alcohol-related crimes that come their way. We’ll be discussing the alcohol-related crime problem, how this is framed, and who is blamed for it.

How Multilingual is Liverpool?

Stephanie Connor (PhD Researcher in Sociolinguistics)
How multilingual is Liverpool? What can a combination of offline and online research tell us about language diversity amongst Liverpool residents? What social inequalities come to the surface from this research, and what more could be done for the city’s linguistically diverse communities? To answer these questions, this talk presents and explores visual examples of language use (both offline and online) in Liverpool, as well as personal, meaningful accounts from linguistically-diverse residents in the city.
