Join us to hear from two experts in the field of criminology and psychology, who will be looking at what makes people commit murder and violent crime.
Female Serial Killers: Why are we so fascinated with women who kill and kill again?
Professor Elizabeth Yardley
(Professor of Criminology at Birmingham City University)
Within this talk, Professor Yardley will explore the public and the media’s fascination with female serial killers. Drawing on examples from her own research, she will explore what female serial killers ‘look like’, how and why the kill and why we continue to be intrigued by women who commit serial homicide.
Crime Linkage: Violence, Murder and the Criminal Mind
Professor Jessica Woodhams
(Professor of Forensic Psychology at the University of Birmingham)
Studying how offenders commit their crimes, their modus operandi, and using this information to try and apprehend them is a regular feature of crime fiction and popular TV shows. It does, however, have its basis in real world policing: crime linkage is the analysis of crime scene behaviour to determine if two or more crimes are likely to be “linked”. Professor Woodhams has studied crime linkage for 15+ years and will take the audience through what has been learned to date about whether offenders commit their crimes in a consistent manner and what may influence this.
