Virtual reality and surgical robotics are both active fields in their own right. But what further advances can be made when the two areas are fused together? Join us for a night of talks and interactive demos on the use of virtual reality to aid surgical robotics during eye surgery. Plus we will have a bonus talk on entrepreneurship in science and you will get the chance of winning Pint of Science goodies!

How can snake-like robots help keep people from going blind?

Dr John O'Neill (Research Associate)
How can snake-like robots help keep people from going blind? I will be discussing a new type of robot made of concentric tubes which can be used in ophthalmology. I will be focusing on how the robots work, from their design to how to control them using haptic feedback. There will be a live demo of a haptic device controlling a virtual eye surgery available to anyone who wants to try it out!

Showing the invisible: augmented reality in vitreoretinal surgery.

Dr Christos Bergeles (Lecturer)
I will discuss how we are interpreting images in vitreoretinal surgery in order to provide the surgeon with as much relevant information as possible - even fusing information from multiple imaging sources.

Channeling Entrepreneurship to Change Healthcare

Dr Ayokunmi Ajetunmobi (Co-Founder & CEO of DISCE)
We live in a world of an increasingly aging population and a rise in chronic disease that places a heavy burden on health services. Solving these challenges requires novel solutions from entrepreneurial individuals building successful companies. Academic labs and big pharma are no longer the sole proprietors of innovation. Today, the most transformative technologies are being developed by small teams sharing a common purpose to solve big problems. These are the radicals and the pioneers going toe-to-toe with the healthcare challenges that affect us all, globally. Why not be part of that?
