In this event we’ll talk all things wearable tech, from the state-of-the-art products to cutting-edge advances in sensors, data interpretation and revolutionary applications. Discover the engineering behind wearables and how relevant personalised fitness advice is to YOU. Explore the potential for AI musical instrument tutors and digital interfaces based on biometric data.

Inside wearables

Dr Alex Casson (Reader, Materials Devices and Systems Division, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
In this talk I’ll look at the engineering behind wearable technologies. We’ll start with a look at the state of the art, and pros and the cons of current units. We’ll then look into the engineering efforts looking to help overcome some of the current limitations. This will help give us an insight into where we’re going next with wearables research, and what next generation devices might look like.

Can wearable tech provide new musical instruments?

Dr. Chris Rhodes (Research Fellow (EPSRC Doctoral Prize), The University of Manchester)
This talk looks at how current research with wearable sensors can allow us to create music using our bodily data (i.e., reading movement and other biometrics). Through modern wearable tech, we can reach a greater understanding of how we perform with physical musical instruments (e.g., the guitar) and then use that understanding to perform with virtual instruments within different digital spaces (i.e., mixed/virtual/augmented reality). These digital environments are particularly exciting to explore because they offer novel ways for us to interact with computers, both intuitive and creative.

Fitness advice: do you know where the science comes from?

Martin Ashby and Clare Simpson (Chief Innovation Officer + Head of Data & Insight, Prevayl Limited)
There is a proliferation of detailed fitness advice available from sports watches and other wearable technology, but how relevant is it to you and your specific individual needs? This talk will take a look at the science that is used as the foundation for this insight and highlight that it’s not always as relevant to you as it seems.
