This night will celebrate all things mouthy! Starting with taste, we will explore the art of beer-making, visiting brewing methods through the ages. Moving on to communication, a fantastic art installation by an MMU student forms the centrepiece for a discussion on the language of hard science vs. “pseudo-science”. Lastly, hear just how poetic science can be, with a mini science-poetry workshop

Should we fear “chemical beer”? Historian Dr James Sumner demonstrates the bygone art of the “beer doctors”, who used chemical additives to stabilise the product. While scientific researchers supported innovation, rumours of poisonings caused public panic, tax-dodging worried the authorities, and the courts were faced with the question of whether it’s legal to brew with stinking fish…
