Chronic diseases are common in developed countries but remain largely intractable - an important, multidisciplinary challenge for scientists. In this event, we explore research on very different factors that influence clinical outcomes in chronic diseases: influences of genes on the fate of T cells in viral infections, and biases in the clinical care of patients with endometriosis.
A matter of survival -- for your T cells
Dr Robert Busch
(Senior Lecturer, School of LIfe & Health Sciences, University of Roehampton)
T cells of the immune system screen body cells for viral infection and coordinate and regulate other immune defences, but they also contribute to many chronic disease processes. The maintenance of T cells is therefore important in many diseases, but little is known about what regulates their lifespan and renewal. This talk will discuss how we can measure the lifespan of T cells in the human body, and how genes influence these measures in chronic viral infections.
