Mancunian Identity
Dr. Kate Milestone
(Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University)
This talk explores the spectre of 'Mancunian identity' through the lens of sociology. We unpick what a Mancunian identity might consist of and discuss representations of this identity and the impacts that these representations have. The presentation will draw on a range of examples from media, popular culture, and history, alongside statistics and research to delve deeply in to what it means to be Mancunian. What are the links between place and identity?
Birds, Bees, and Bodies. Mancunian Symbols and Identities
Dr. Christian Klesse
(Reader at Manchester Metropolitan University)
Christian Klesse will talk about Manchester as a hub of diverse identities, of multiplicity, a space of migration and diaspora formation, vibrant LGBTQ+ cultures. This is sometimes forgotten in glossy marketing narratives of the city.
