Can we quantify art for scientific research? Is there space for computers in creativity? Join us for an evening at the edge of art and science.

Throughout this event we will explore the use of art as a scientific metric and discover the cross over between art and comedy. We also examine the future of art following the emergence of powerful AI technology which can imitate many artistic media. You will have chance to discuss the role of AI in art and creativity with a panel of artists and researchers as we celebrate 60 years of computers science and AI research at the University of Edinburgh.

Art meets AI: Is there space for computers in creativity? (Panel Discussion)

Dr Ian Rothwell (Lecturer in Contemporary Art History and Digital Culture)
Eddie Ungless (PhD Student in AI)
Kei and Gordon (Musicians from group 'Bring Me the Apples')
Lauren Pincher (Pinch) (Artist)
During this session we'll invite the audience to pose questions regarding the role technology and AI has in creativity; art and its quality and meaning; and how the emergence of AI-generated art will shape the future of the arts. Our panel of creatives and experts in the art and AI field consists of newly established artist Lauren Pincher (PinchPaints), musicians Kei and Gordon from group 'Bring me the Apples', and AI PhD student Eddie Ungless.

Science comedy, children's drawings and penis sharks

Dr Sarah-Jane Judge (Public Engagement Manager and Comedian)
With a background in natural sciences, social sciences and the arts, you might describe Sarah-Jane Judge as a polymath- but she’s actually only got a passing grade in all of them! After studying biology, working in science communication for 15 years and doing a PhD in the sociology of non-formal science learning, SJ finally found her perfect home in Public Engagement.

Learn about her highly varied career involving explosions, having her own plane (for a week), filming fights, analysing children’s drawings and a ridiculous amount of penis sharks - all in the form of a stand up set.

PERFORMANCE: Composing music -human vs AI

Bring Me the Apples (Band)
Everyone likes music, composed very beautifully by talented musicians. You can also do it by using AI! Let’s compare how music is composed by human or AI.

EXHIBITION: PinchPaints

This event will feature an exhibition of artwork by Pinch (they/them). Pinch is a fine artist based in Norwich, known primarily for specializing in the unique beauty of cityscapes, from bustling streets to historic buildings. Pinch's latest work in progress explores the space between anxiety and reality. Through their paintings, they ground themselves in the physical world and create a sense of order out of the chaos in their mind. The importance of mental health is a central theme in Pinch's work. They aim to raise awareness of the struggles that many face and the therapeutic power of art.
