Join Dr Chris Monaghan and Dr Michael Lane, experts in constitutional law and human rights at the University of Worcester, for an evening of insight into the UK constitution. Your speakers will delve into contemporary questions in constitutional law, including “what is the UK constitution?”, “how does the constitution work?”, and “what on earth does The Office have to do with any of this?!".

A lesson on the UK constitution (but it’s entirely ‘US Office’ memes)

Dr Michael Lane (Lecturer in Law, Research Lead for Law)
When Michael Scott asked “why are you the way that you are”, he was clearly referring to the UK constitution. I navigate three tricky questions (what is the UK constitution, what are its contents, and why should we care?) by taking a whistlestop tour through Scranton, Pennsylvania where the audience will learn about the UK constitution through the lens of characters from the US sitcom, The Office. The audience will feel like their mind “is going a mile an hour” as I deploy memes, video and comedy to interrogate contemporary questions surrounding the constitution.

Muddling-Through: How the UK responds to periods of political turmoil

Dr Chris Monaghan (Head of Law)
A constitution is the key rules by which a club, society or company are governed. At a national level a constitution is a collection of rules, practices, laws which relate to the political life of a country and the key rights of any citizen. The UK’s constitution can be described as the ‘muddling-through’ constitution, as an acknowledgment of its historically proven strength and flexibility when responding to challenges. But unlike most other constitutions, the UK’s is said to be ‘unwritten’ and has been criticised as unfit for modern circumstances. Join us to find out more!
