Black holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects found in outer space. They are objects of extreme density, with such strong gravitational attraction that even light cannot escape from their grasp if it comes near enough.
Without them, our universe as we know it would not exist...

Quasars
Victoria Fawcett
(Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy, Durham University)
Quasars are THE brightest known objects in the visible universe. They are so bright that they outshine the entire galaxy they sit in. So, what are quasars? Where are they found? How do they become so bright? What are they made of? How far are they from us? Victoria tells us more!
The Dark Side of the Universe: Revealing Hidden Black holes
Prof David Alexander
(Director in the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy)
The Universe is full of supermassive black holes. These black holes light up when they feed on gas and dust, in extreme cases becoming bright enough to be detected out to the edge of the Universe. Most of these black holes are hidden from direct view and David will explain how we can find them and understand how they formed.
