Feminist Fieldwork, Fear and Fun: Negotiating Machismo in Latin America

Professor Cathy McIlwaine (Professor of Geography)

Cathy will talk about the perils and opportunities of conducting feminist fieldwork in Latin American countries. Working on gender inequalities and gender-based violence can be challenging, but also inspiring, dangerous and amazing fun. Cathy will cover several decades of doing feminist research - interviewing women and men about machismo, speaking with gang members, avoiding gang members and learning from inspirational women and women's organisations.

Out of Thin Air: Fine Margins and Frostbite from Mount Everest's Weather

Dr Tom Matthews (Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography)

To put this mildly, Dr Tom Matthews studies extreme weather. His intrigue has taken him to the top of the world to install weather stations in order to learn more about the environment. Tom’s research on Mount Everest is a true test of his own limits, as well as the limits of scientific knowledge in extreme environments.

Clueless in Cambodia

Samantha Day (PhD student, Department of Geography)

Sam spent 8 months getting to know Cambodia and forest conservation through ethnographic methods. While anticipating complexity, Sam’s research constantly plunged her into the unexpected. Fine dining picnics with tycoons, covert meetings with outlawed activists, Facebook friend requests from Buddhist monks, making friends with indigenous peoples through google translation, and the fear of peeing in the dark while wild camping in the forest, Sam reflects on being comfortable with the unknown in research.

Perks of Being a Wall-Follower

Merrill Hopper (PhD student, Department of Geography)

Merrill’s fieldwork has taken her to Berlin, Belfast and Detroit to stare at walls. It might sound boring, but landscapes contain a whole host of information and gossip about the power and identities of the place. In the field, Merrill uses all sorts of walking – rambling, walking tours, lunging (for fun) – as a way to learn about the spaces she is researching, always thinking of the immortal words of Auntie Mabel and Pippin: ‘Look up, look down, look all around’.
