What do wind farms, reforestation... and moths have in common? They all have a role to play in saving our planet. Join Dr Nathan Johnson as he breaks down the science behind the most effective climate solutions — from trees to wind turbines — and explains what it really takes to cut emissions. Then, let Prof Tim Blackburn change your mind about moths as he reveals their hidden beauty, ecological power, and place in the urban wild. Come for the science, stay for the fluttering facts and future-focused ideas.
The climate is changing – what do the people think we should do about it?
Dr Nathan Johnson
(Researcher and Lecturer in Climate Change Mitigation, Imperial College London)
Most people know our climate is changing, yet few understand the actions that can be taken to stop climate change and even fewer implement these actions. Nathan will review the many diverse strategies available for mitigating climate change and introduce an approach to compare these on level terms. He will show, for example, how much wind power, reforestation, or electric vehicles must be deployed to reduce global emissions by 5%. Nathan will then reflect on the vital role of the public – and not just academics and policymakers – in selecting the strategies we choose to mitigate climate change.

Why we should all love moths
Dr Tim Blackburn
(Professor of Invasion Biology, UCL)
Moths are jewels of our natural heritage. They’re as beautiful as butterflies and as industrious as bees, yet lots of people I talk to seem to have an instinctive dislike of these insects. Tim will introduce you to the wonderful diversity of moths, which can be found even in the dark heart of inner London. He will show how they can inform about how the natural world works, and explain why they are such important links in the web of life that includes you and me. Hopefully, by the end of the talk, you will love moths as much as he does.
