Is drinking all bad after all? Or is it "sola dosis facit venenum" (The dose makes the poison)? Come along if you want to know the healthy side of drinking and how can computers help you check if you have an addiction.

Food bioactives for heathy brain aging

Giulia Corona (Senior Lecturer)
Plant derived foods and drinks are rich in bioactive compounds called polyphenols, which play a big role in healthy ageing and chronic disease prevention. Today I will talk to you about how they help us maintain a healthy brain, improve memory and delay aging-related cognitive disfunction.

Using supercomputers to find a common link with addiction and neurological disease

Michelle Sahai (Senior Lecturer)
Supercomputers have emerged as an invaluable tool in biomedical research, specifically in the study of drug abuse and addiction. This necessity is driven by the fact that we still know very little how drugs such as cocaine and novel psychoactive substances (formerly “legal highs”) can wreak havoc on the nervous system, causing the euphoric feeling known as the “high”. In this talk I will take you into a virtual world to discuss how we use computational methods jointly with traditional methods to understand these specific mechanisms that lead to addiction and abuse of drugs.
